Self Portrait - Week of October 31st - November 4th 2011.

There was a short 5 part mini-series in Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight titled ‘Venom’.

Bruce, distraught over being unable to save the life of a child due to the constraints of mortal strength - turned to a steroid known as ‘Venom’ to increase his abilities, gain mass, and escape the pain of ever having to deal with loss due to insufficiancies again.

Venom became his escape from pain. ‘Venom’ became his addiction. Venom became him. 

And so he broke. Twice now, ‘Venom’ broke the bat (the second time would be many years later - and due to it coursing in the veins of Bane…)

But? Bruce overcame. He locked himself in his cave. He hid. He purged. He survived on rats and wrath - and exited the darkness more frail, but clean. And truly, stronger. 

This week I fought my own ‘Venom’. I hid. But I too survived. And much like Bruce - will have to continue fighting it. 

I am exhausted. But I am reborn.

And I am stronger.

Moral of the story: When you think something controls you? Ask yourself…

What would Batman do?
